A large teak woodcarving with blue tile mosaic border displaying a pair of dancing German women, by artist Howard Houseknecht of Oregon. Signed in the bottom right by the artist. With a French cleat across the back for the piece to be displayed on a wall Houseknecht began his carpentry apprenticeship with master carpenter Z in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1972. As a child and young man, he visited the workshop of his neighbor William Birkenburger. Mr. Birkenburger was a wood sculptor and woodworker who was born and trained in Germany. Howard studied drawing, sculpture and art history at the University of Oregon. Some of the mosaic tile pieces are missing. Note: This item is extremely heavy. Measures 71″ H x 51″ W x 2″ D.
