“The Clam Digger”, original orotone by Edward Sheriff Curtis, circa 1898. This exquisite example is housed in its original frame with article on verso and signed by Curtis, lower right. Measures in frame, 13.5” H x 11.5” W. Curtis won a prize for this image at the National Photographic Convention in 1899. An orotone or gold tone is one of many types of photographic print which can be made from a negative. An orotone photograph is created by printing a positive on a glass plate precoated with a silver gelatin emulsion.
